Student Responsibilities

  • Complete all class and homework assignments neatly and on time.
  • Have all necessary materials (pencils, books, folder, paper, etc.)
  • Keep materials and work organized.
  • Respect Our Rules
  • Read, Read, Read, and Write, Write, Write!

Mr. H’s Responsibilities

  • Every student will be treated with respect, and receive the help needed to succeed.
  • Our class will follow a Standards-based curriculum
  • Student evaluations will be based on data.

Planners…

Each student has been supplied with a Planner.  In Mr. H’s class, each day starts and ends with a review of the agenda and assignments.  Students are asked to copy the agenda and assignments every day.  The school expects the Planner to be used, and a letter was sent home at the beginning of the year explaining the importance of using this wonderful tool.

Exploration Folders…

Each student has been provided with a folder in which to keep classwork and homework until turned in.  We call these activities “Explorations.”  Students should always – always – have their Exploration folders with them.

Reading…

Students are expected to read 20 minutes each day/night.  This is a minimum.  Time is provided for reading in class, but reading at home is a wonderful habit to form at an early age.  Students should always have a book of their choice with them at school.   Mr. H. has a library, the school has a library, Ms. Vaaler has a library, the city of Phoenix has a library – students are encouraged to read, read, read.

Writing…

Our students will improve their writing skills, continuing in Madison’s fine tradition of producing quality young writers.   We will study and practice all forms of writing, from poetry to persuasive letters.  We will write, write, write.

Spelling…

Spelling this year will be integrated with our reading and vocabulary acquisition.  Work will be assigned to support growth in spelling ability, and quizzes will be given regularly.

Vocabulary…

Students will be challenged to acquire new vocabulary from reading selections.  There will be vocabulary building assignments and lessons.

Grammar...

Students will learn the way the English language works – grammar and usage – and this will make them better readers, writers, and speakers.

Literature...

Our classroom will become a rich world of words, images, thoughts, ideas, and feelings as we explore all the genres of Literature through anthologies, novel studies, and books chosen by the students.

Library…

We will visit the Madison No. 1 library often, during regular class periods.

Technology…

Students will use of the computers in the classroom and in the lab.   Students will learn useful applications (PowerPoint, Word, etc.), and will be able to complete assignments and assessments online at school and at home (if their guardians approve).

Homework and Grades…

Homework should always be either practice or a project.  There will be occasional projects related to book reports, author studies, and the like.

Grades will be based upon:

§         Class participation.  Each week a participation grade is entered in the grade book.  This is a subjective grade, determined by Mr. H.  Students will see their participation grades monthly, and can request a conference to discuss improving this grade.  It will be worth about 20% of the grade.

§         Explorations.  Class work and homework turned in each week will be worth about 30% of the grade.

§         Tests.  Spelling tests, quizzes on reading selections, grammar and usage quizzes, and other in-class demonstrations of ability will be worth about 25% of the grade.

§         Writing…In addition to the writing portions of the weekly Explorations, other writing assignments – done in class and occasionally at home – will count for about 25% of the grade.

High expectations will be maintained for all students, but each student is a special individual.   Mr. H’s definition of “fair”:  treating each child according to her needs and gifts.    Grades are driven by data, and tempered with enough flexibility to serve the best needs of each student.
